Sounddance
The CCN - Ballet de Lorraine will perform Sounddance (1975) as part their program at the Rohm Theatre in Kyoto, Japan on September 21 and 22. Sounddance was reconstructed by Meg Harper (MCDC 1968 - 1977) and CCN - Ballet de Lorraine rehearsal director Thomas Caley (MCDC 1993 - 2000). David Tudor’s powerful score for Sounddance provides an energetic accompaniment to Cunningham’s fast pace choreography. Mark Lancaster designed the original costumes. Info

Compagnie CNDC (Le Centre National de Danse Contemporaine) - Angers will perform Beach Birds (1991) and BIPED (1999) on September 26 and 27, 2018 at Le Quai, Angers, France. The dances were staged by Artistic Director Robert Swinston (MCDC 1980 - 2011) with assistance for BIPED from Ashley Chen (MCDC 2000 - 2003) and Cheryl Therrien (MCDC 1993 - 2003) as part of the Cunningham Centennial celebration. Former company dancer Lise Friedman and director Maia Wechsler made "If the Dancer Dances" to try to illumniate the fagility of preserving legacy dances. They documented the work of former company dancers Andrea Weber, Meg Harper, and Rashaun Mitchell as they restaged Cunningham's iconic RainForest on the Stephen Petronio Company. The film premiered at the Dance on Film festival at Lincoln Center this summer and will appear in London. Info

Choreoscope hosts the Merce Cunningham Workshop, led by Trevor Carlson (Centennial Producer, Trustee of the Merce Cunningham Trust, and former Merce Cunningham Dance Company Executive Director), imparting aspects of the choreographer’s practice such as the separation of music from dance, chance procedures, filmdance, and DanceForms software. Choreoscope will screen two Cunningham films. A Lifetime of Dance (2000, directed by Charles Atlas) is a portrait of Cunningham packed with rare archive footage of his company, featuring Cunningham performing an improvisation especially for the film, and rehearsing with Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Mélange, also by Charles Atlas, with music by John Cage, will be featured on October 9. The CCN - Ballet de Lorraine will perform RainForest (1975) as part their program in Amiens, France on October 11. RainForest was reconstructed by Ashley Chen (MCDC 2000 - 2003) and Cheryl Therrien(MCDC 1993 - 2003). David Tudor’s music evokes the chirping and chattering of birds and animals. Jasper Johns cut flesh colored leotards and tights with a razor blade to give the costumes a roughened appearance. Info

A To Y MinEvent
A-Y/dancers will premiere their first evening length performance at the historic Howland Cultural Center. A-Y/dancers will perform an A To Y MinEvent, an arrangement of Cunningham works from the 1960s, 1970s and early 2000s uniquely staged for them by former Merce Cunningham Dance Company member Jean Freebury. The MinEvent will share a bill with a work by acclaimed dancemaker Doug Varone and a new commission by emerging choreographer Hannah Garner. Info

Artist Jorge Otero-Pailos created an immersive installation in the City Center Harkness Studio. The work explores how dance masters pass their choreography from generation to generation through a trusted disciple who serves as their living archive. Otero-Pailos has incorporated a sound collage of dancers learning a Cunningham work from Patricia Lent.

Torse
A collaboration with choreographer Merce Cunningham, Charles Atlas’ film of the remarkably difficult dance Torse features a score by pioneering composer Maryanne Amacher. Torse has been generously provided by the Merce Cunningham Trust and is being screened as part of the official Merce Cunningham Centennial Celebration. This film is screened in association with the current exhibition Sensory Agents. Featuring a double screen, Torse was filmed in 1977 at the University of Washington, Seattle and first screened publicly at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and the Lincoln Center in 1978. Merce Cunningham, Clouds and Screens
Celebrating the Merce Cunningham Centennial, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art presents Merce Cunningham, Clouds and Screens which includes two large works made by artists associated with the choreographer’s company—Andy Warhol’s Silver Clouds and Charles Atlas’s MC9. Warhol’s whimsical Silver Clouds was used as décor for Cunningham’s 1968 dance RainForestMC9, short for “Merce Cunningham to the ninth power,” is an immersive installation with excerpts from 21 dances for camera and documentary videos Atlas made with Cunningham. Two videos documenting early Cunningham dances are screened in an adjacent gallery: Changeling (1958), a solo piece, and Night Wandering (1964), a duet with star dancer Carolyn Brown. Info
