Field and Figures

“Field and Figures” had a more evident structure than many Cunningham dances. The cast of fourteen dancers was divided into four groups of three or four dancers. Each group was associated with one of the four elements: earth, water, fire and air. Each group had its own set of phrases, approximately sixteen phrases each out of a gamut of 64. The dance was structured such that each group appeared one time alone, and one time paired with each of the other groups. In addition to the four elements, Cunningham’s choreographic notes refer to two forces: gravity, associated with earth and water; and levity associated with fire and air.
