The title “Grange Eve” referred to the grange halls where Cunningham had danced as a teenager. It was a lively, light-hearted dance incorporating elements of social dancing, as well as pantomimed vignettes. In one memorable sequence, all the men including Cunningham did a dance with canes in which chance operations were used to determine, for each dancer, a random sequence of weight shifts on the right foot, on the left foot, or with the cane.
