Paired

“Paired” was an indeterminate work consisting of nine “color-cued” events. The sequence of these events was determined in performance by Cunningham and Viola Farber. Between each event, either could run into the wings, dip into one of nine cans of paint, run back onstage and smear paint on the other. The color of the paint indicated which event would be done next. “It was a violent dance,” Cunningham recalled.
