For this dance Cunningham made a gamut of short phrases that were passed from one dancer to another, according to chance procedures. There was also a great deal of stillness: one dancer would be moving while the others remained immobile. This kind of fragmentation also appeared to reflect Cunningham’s thinking about the nature of society: “Society is split into so many directions.” The piece indeed had a somber, tragic feeling. The sound source of David Tudor’s score (Webwork) was sea-sounds recorded under water, subsequently fragmented and electronically transformed. William Anastasi designed an abstract backcloth and dressed the dancers in sweatpants over leotards, in greenish gray.
