Tossed As It Is Untroubled

"Tossed As It Is Untroubled," presented on Cunningham and Cage's first joint concert of solo dances and music, was described in an early program as "an externalization of a laugh within the mind." The title is a paraphrase of the phrase "unhemmed as it is uneven" from James Joyce's "Finnegans Wake." "The dance was full of very rapid, tiny shaking movements, and it involved a great deal of going up and down on to your heels," Cunningham recalled, "it was awful to do."
