Changing Steps is a film adaptation of Merce Cunningham's 1973 dance Changing Steps. It was filmed in October 1988 at Sundance Institute in Provo, Utah and Sunrise Studios in Orem, Utah and first publicly screened on May 15, 1989 at Anthology Film Archives in New York City. The film also incorporates archival footage recorded at the Merce Cunningham Studio in New York, New York in April 1974, and at Bühen der Stadt in Bielefeld, Stadthalle in Neuss, Forum in Leverkusen in West Germany in June 1988. The original 1973 dance consisted of ten solos, five duets, three trios, two quartets, and two quintets which could be performed in any order, either sequentially or overlapping. The music for the film is John Cage's Cartridge Music. The costumes were designed by Mark Lancaster and Suzanne Gallo.
