Inventions

“Inventions” was a full company work for fifteen dancers. According to Cunningham, “the dance is compromised of sixty-four separate phrases, the continuity of the phrases arranged by chance operations with the further chance possibility of additions or inventions added to any single phrase.” Cage’s music, called “Scuptures musicales,” derived from a note by Marcel Duchamp in his “Green Box for a Sculpture musicale.” Cage described the music as consisting of a number of sounds “coming out of the silence and lasting, like a sculpture, and then disappearing.” The design was the first for the company by the Philadelphia artist Carl Kielblock.
