"Mysterious Adventure" marked the first time Cunningham collaborated with a New York visual artist: David Hare designed a black costume and headpiece, and an object made of plywood. "The dance," Cunningham recalled, "was very quick, and had a lot of hopping about, like a mosquito." The music, by John Cage, was for prepared piano. Cunningham performed this solo on his joint concerts with Cage, and also danced it on two programs with Martha Graham’s company in May 1945.
