Pictures

One of the most striking elements of Mark Lancaster’s décor was the lighting, which shown against the backcloth, capturing the dancer’s movements like photographic images taken by a still camera. Cunningham’s choreography for Pictures frequently isolated small groups of dancers, in intricate, linked poses, as in when the last flash of light hit the stage, and Cunningham lifted the motionless body of Patricia Lent, then the newest member of the company, and held her horizontally, as if it were the last image in a photo album. Lancaster’s costumes were gray or black leotards and blue sweatpants. The musical score by David Behrman was performed by Takehisa Kosugi.
