The most notable feature of Trails was a pair of duets, later included in material for Events. For these Cunningham pursued the idea of having the two dancers perform different movements rather than the same ones—he choreographed their phrases separately. Cage’s music (Instances of Silence) was a sound collage using pre-recorded tapes of such sounds as those of the traffic on Sixth Avenue outside the loft he and Cunningham shared. Lancaster’s costumes were in combinations of red and gray, against a red backdrop.
